Mornings made easier

Everyday there are fewer and fewer morning people, and I have joined the club. My morning routine consist of hitting the snooze button at least twice, wrinkling my nose when I accept that I have to get up, and finally just sit there for 3 minutes before actually get up. This of course, leads to me rushing! I have come up with a few time saving tips and a few tips to just making mornings a little bit easier.

1) Use your cellphone to set multiple alarms. My phone has a feature to set multiple and even slowly increase the volume. However, if you are not lucky enough to have those features here’s what you can do. Set multiple 23 alarms on your phone but, make the first one nature sounds like birds chirping. This helps slowly wake your mind and body. If you still use an old school alarm the best thing you can do is set it across the room. This way if you want to his snooze you will have to get out of bed to do it and will less likely sleep through it.

2) Now that you are up, drink a nice cold glass of water to wake your brain and organs.

3) Make a morning music playlist and use it as your timer. This will help set a routine and you won’t have to keep checking the time.

4) PreSelected outfits are a blessing. If you are anything like me, picking out what to wear consumes the majority of your time. If you pick out an outfit the night before, (or better yet, a week’s worth in advance) it will save you that stress. Make sure it is wrinkle free and ready to go. Don’t forget the shoes!

5) PreMade coffee. Some of us need a little caffeine in the morning to get us going. Some make it at home and some opt to stop by a café. Either way, a nice time saving tip is to have some iced coffee in the fridge that you can grab and go. This can either be pre made by you or store bought. This is especially convenient for days you are running late.

6) It’s always been said, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I Make sure to keep portable snacks on hand that are healthy. That way if you skip breakfast, you won’t be binging on chips from the vending machine at 10am. Fruit is one of the best things you can keep on hand. Also, keep some granola bars in your car or desk just in case.

7) Leave anything you need to take with you by the door so you won’t forget it. If you can’t leave it there, make sure to leave a sticky note in its place.

8) Use your commute and time in traffic for you. Traffic can be very stressful, so, turn a negative into a positive! Sing along to your favorite tunes, expand your knowledge by listening to NPR, or enjoy a good audiobook reserved for your drives that way you have something to look forward to.

9) Have backups in your car or office. By backups I mean an outfit and toiletries. I can’t even count the number of times I have forgotten to apply deodorant before leaving the house, spilled something on myself, or wore very uncomfortable shoes. It is good to have extras so those minor problems don’t become major problems.

10) Lastly, keep a smile on your face. It might start out feeling forced but it will help you and others be happier. I hope some of these tricks can help you improve your mornings. Although these are for a working person, they can definitely be used for children as well. And of course nothing can replace a goodnight’s sleep. Keep these tips in mind and have a good morning!

You have an interview for your dream job.
Do you ace it or is it a total abomination?
You may be the perfect candidate for a job position, but a bad interview can quickly change that. Take our quick quiz to see if your interview skills are top notch or could use some brushing up on.

1. You’re called because they loved you on paper and want to get you in as soon as possible for an interview. They let you know that they can squeeze you in for Friday afternoon and if not you will have to wait 2 weeks for the recruiter to return from a business trip. You run into a dilemma because you have concert tickets for your favorite band that same day. The venue is 4 hours away so you would miss at least half of the show. What do you do?

a) Schedule the inter view for 2 weeks out. It’s a winwin situation. You make it to the show on time and still get to interview.
b) You tell a white lie and let them know you have an important medical procedure. You don’t want them to think you don’t care about the job but you also don’t want to miss this once in a lifetime show.
c) You take the earliest possible interview time. Sometimes we have to make sacrifices.

2. It’s interview day. You’re looking sharp and just need the final touch, perfume. Which do you pick?

a) Your signature everyday scent. Why change what’s not broken, right?
b) Nothing but soap and deodorant.
c) The luxurious and expensive perfume reserved for very special occasions. You want to make a good impression after all.

3. You’re heading out the door to your interview, what do you take with you?

a) Your charm and amazing personality. A great attitude is everything.
b) Your smartphone, it has absolutely everything you would need.
c) Resumes, references, a copy of the application, pens, note pad.

4. It’s go time! You’re in the office with your interviewer and you’re waiting for the receptionist to bring in some documents. The wait is getting long and the silence is so bad you can here your watch ticking. You decide to start up a conversation, what do you talk about?

a) The election, it’s a hot topic right now so you know you wont run out of things to say.
b) The weather, it is a reliable topic.
c) The crazy weekend you had. Some funny stuff happened and making someone laugh is a good way to make them like you.

5. You are asked for references. Who are your go to people?

a) Your closest friends, they’re guaranteed to only say amazing things about you.
b) A few coworkers and supervisors from your previous job.
c) A former teacher from high school whos class you always aced.

1:C Miss the concert or be late. Although its an amazing show to miss, delaying the interview can be a missed opportunity. Between now and 2 weeks they may pick someone else for the position. Plus your eagerness to interview displays you interest in the job.

2:B We all love to smell good but you never know who may be sensitive to fragrance so it better to play it safe and stick to soap and deodorant. You don’t want the first thing they remember about you to be that they hated your perfume.

3:C Its better to be over prepared. With any interview you always want to make sure to have a copies of your resume and a writing utensil. Show them you are well prepared. It is an extra opportunity to show why you would be a great
asset to their team.

4:B As boring as the weather is, it is a safety net. Talking about politics can get risky, especially if you guys don’t agree. You also don’t want to overshare about your personal life. Start the conversation, but allow them to take the lead so you don’t get into any hot water.

5: B It is always best to have references be from your professional past. It makes you look better when former  employers have good things to say. Its shows that you were a great employee in the past. If you are younger and have no work experience it is okay to include an educational reference, but try to get some volunteer work to list
as reference. Volunteer work also shows your work for passion and not just the money.

Your interview starts as soon as you leave home. You never know who you may see on your way to the interview. Maybe that guy who cut you off is the interview. Road rage would not help you get the job.

Always be polite. Smile, greet everyone, and remember names. Make everyone feel important. The receptionist may not be doing your interview but she may still have input.

Do you research on the company and job you are applying for. This shows you are interested in the position and ready to join the team.

Detox your social media accounts. We live in an age where we put everything online. Employers are aware of this and may look you up online to get a better idea of who you are. Make sure it looks presentable. Would you hire yourself based off of your online profile?

Have some questions prepared for your interview. It shows you are a good listener and are interested in knowing even more about the company.

Dress the part. Look like you already belong there. Don’t go down the trendy route but instead go with a classic and timeless look. You might think you look cool with that crazy patterned blazer but your interviewer might think otherwise. Invest in a nice reliable go to interview outfit. Think of it as an investment.

If you are a woman who loves makeup try to stick to a more natural look. We don’t want bright purple lips or a smokey eye to distract from your amazing qualifications.

Be engaged. Don’t be a robot who only speaks to answer a question and that’s it. Be engaged and personable.

Don’t assume. We all know how that saying goes and for good reason. You don’t want to be in a sticky situation where you compliment a picture of you interviewers “daughter” but it is actually his wife and you insinuated that he is old enough to be her father. The situation just caused embarrassment all around so lets avoid it.

Always follow up. Within 24 hours make sure to send a Thank You email. Thank them for taking time to see you and let them know it was a pleasure interviewing with them. They may have not remembered you to well from the interview but this just reminded them of how amazing you were.
